On August 2, 1832, severe fighting took place 1 mile east at Battle Bluff and hard fighting occurred opposite at Battle Island during the Black Hawk War. General Henry's 300 Illinois militia fought 300 Sac Indians, while 1200 white soldiers were engaged. Seventeen were killed and twelve Indians were wounded. Of the Indians, 150 were shot, 150 drowned, and 50 were taken prisoner. Three hundred crossed the river, of whom 150 were killed by Sioux said to have been instigated by General Atkinson. Of the 1000 Sacs who crossed the river from Iowa in April 1832, not more than 150 survived to tell the tragic story of the Black Hawk War.
