Corporal Leo M. Smith was killed in action at Soissons, France, on July 19, 1918, and Stanley Hoover was killed in action in the Argonne Forest, France, on October 26, 1918. The memorial also honors the men of Harbor Springs who went forth at the call of their country to fight in the Great War for worldwide liberty from 1917 to 1918. For 1941 to 1945, it remembers Gordon Burns, David Burton, Rodney Hill, Phillip Hulett, Lawrence Petoskey, and John Tippett as those who made the supreme sacrifice, and it honors those from Harbor Springs who served their country during World War II.
