Mount Hood Skibowl, near Government Camp on Mount Hood, is the closest ski area on the mountain to Portland and the largest night ski area in the United States, with about two thirds of its nine hundred sixty acres lit after dark. Known for heavy snowfall, roughly sixty-five marked trails, and a vertical drop of about one thousand five hundred feet, it developed from the separate Skibowl and Multorpor ski areas. Beginning with jump competitions, rope tows, and a chairlift between nineteen twenty-eight and nineteen forty-nine, the two areas were united in nineteen sixty-four. After a bankruptcy sale in nineteen eighty-seven, the resort expanded into a year-round recreation area.
