Timberline Lodge ski area on Mount Hood’s south face grew from the lodge built between 1936 and 1938 as a Works Progress Administration project and opened Oregon’s first destination ski resort. Its high mountain setting, with most terrain below the lodge, became distinctive early with the 1939 Magic Mile chairlift and Silcox Hut. Despite closures caused by financial problems and World War II, the area has operated successfully since 1956 and developed into the only ski area in the United States with lift-accessed skiing and snowboarding in all twelve months of the year. Summer skiing, competitive camps, and the long-running Golden Rose Ski Classic give it a unique place in American ski history.
