On this land granted in 1815 to Revolutionary War veteran Captain Edward Beeson for providing provisions to Andrew Jackson's Tennessee Militia, Beeson and other community members built a log church in 1830. In 1885, William Spruell Beason deeded the property to the Methodist Episcopal Church of the United States, and a new frame building replaced the old log church. That building also served as a subscription school, where the community paid and boarded a teacher to educate forty students. After the church burned in 1919, it was rebuilt with lumber milled on the site by the Hinton, Staton, Rickles, Bowlin, and Beason families. Electric lighting was added in 1944, and a coal-burning stove remained in use until 1965. The church merged with the Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1939, was listed in the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1978, and discontinued services in 1977 as attendance diminished. In 1981, the Beason family formed Union Cemetery Association, and in 1982 the North Alabama Conference deeded the church to the group, which continues to maintain the property for reunions, weddings, funerals, music programs, and use as the polling place for Slate Union Precinct.
