Horton Mill Covered Bridge, north of Oneonta, Alabama, spans the Calvert Prong of the Little Warrior River and traces its origins to an 1894 crossing that improved access between Sand Mountain, Oneonta, and Thurman M. Horton’s nearby mill and store. The present bridge, built in 1934 under Talmedge Horton, is a two-span Town Lattice truss notable for its exceptional height, with the deck about 70 feet above the water, the highest covered bridge over a waterway in the United States. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, it has been restored multiple times and now remains open to pedestrians.
