Mosteller's Mills, five miles northeast on State Highway 140, was a notable plantation and manufacturing center of the 1860s. On May 18, 1864, the Federal 23rd Corps, the left wing of Sherman's forces, marching southward from Resaca and en route to Cassville after crossing at Field's Mill on the Coosawattee River, camped at Mosteller's. Butterfield's Division of the 20th Corps, having also crossed at Field's Mill, marched by Mosteller's, and at Adairsville Butterfield was joined by Geary's and Williams' Divisions of the 20th Corps.
