Susquehanna County was formed on February 21, 1810, out of Luzerne County and was named for the Susquehanna River. It was the home of Galusha A. Grow, sponsor of the 1862 Homestead Act. Montrose, the county seat, was incorporated in 1824 and was an early Abolitionist center and stop on the Underground Railroad.
