Founded in Winsted, Connecticut, by Ralph Nader in his hometown, the American Museum of Tort Law opened to the public in September 2015 as the first law museum in the United States. Devoted to civil justice and wrongful acts causing injury, it grew from an idea Nader announced in 1998 and took years of fundraising, revisions, and local approval to realize. After Nader bought the former Winsted Savings Bank building in 2013, renovations prepared it for opening. Its exhibits use objects and stories, including a 1963 Chevrolet Corvair, to trace landmark tort cases and show how injuries, corporate conduct, and public accountability have shaped public life.
