Beckley Bog, near Norfolk in northwestern Connecticut, is a protected sphagnum-heath-black spruce bog and the southernmost sphagnum heath bog in New England, making it a rare habitat more typical of colder regions. It is especially notable for peat moss deposits more than 51 feet deep. The bog was purchased in 1957 by The Nature Conservancy and the Conservation and Research Foundation in the Conservancy’s first land purchase in Connecticut. In May 1977 it was designated a National Natural Landmark, and it is now part of the Northwest Highlands group of preserves.
