Mount Jepson is a 13,390-foot peak on the Sierra Nevada crest in the Palisades area, straddling the boundary of Kings Canyon National Park and the John Muir Wilderness. Ranked 74th among California’s highest mountains, it rises sharply above nearby terrain and stands out above Elinore Lake, while the John Muir Trail passes below its south side. Its first recorded ascent came on July 3, 1939, by Don McGeein and Chet and Evelyn Errett. Officially named in 1971, the mountain honors University of California, Berkeley botanist and conservationist Willis Linn Jepson. In this alpine setting, runoff drains toward both Big Pine Creek and the Kings River watershed.
