Built around 1918 near Colfax, the Manning-Rye Covered Bridge carried the Spokane and Inland Empire Railroad over the Palouse River as part of an interurban electric line. Also called the Harpole Bridge, it had an unusual design: a timber Howe truss enclosed by timber siding, but with an open roof so locomotives could keep contact with overhead wires. Later used by the Great Northern Railroad, it remained in rail service until 1967, then was converted for automobile access by a private owner. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, it was destroyed in the Manning Fire on September 7, 2020.
