Women served in the military through the Army Nurse Corps, established January 2, 1901; the Navy Nurse Corps, established May 13, 1908; the WAAC/WAC in the Army, established May 15, 1942, with the word auxiliary dropped on July 1, 1943 and merged into the WAC; the WAFS, established September 10, 1942; the WAVES in the Navy, established July 30, 1942; the SPARS of the U.S. Coast Guard, established November 23, 1942; the Women Marines, established February 13, 1942; and the WASP, established August 5, 1943. Combat deaths among women in military service totaled 422 in World War I, 470 in World War II, 16 in Korea, 8 in Vietnam, and 16 in Desert Storm.
