The first marked burial at Perry Cemetery was Charles B. Grant, who died in 1878 and was the son of physician James W. Grant, a onetime landowner in the southern part of the T.K. Wheeler survey; James W. Grant and his wife Mary are also buried there. Early landowners Thomas and Drucilla Perry gave the cemetery its name. When they sold the northern half of the Habermacher survey in 1886 to Christian and Caroline Rumpel, also spelled Rumbel, they required that the existing graveyard and one and a half acres be preserved. After Caroline's death and burial there in 1903, Christian sold the property, added another acre to the cemetery, and left Texas. The cemetery has served community residents since the late 1870s, and family names there include Anderson, Grant, Franklin, Hargrave, McCracken, Park, Perry, West, and Williams. Descendants continue to be buried there among many veterans, community leaders, and families, and its features include family plots and a strangers rest for people not associated with the larger community or with families interred there.
