Battle Ground Lake State Park is a 280-acre public recreation area northeast of Battle Ground, Washington, centered on a crater lake formed about 105,000 years ago by a magma-driven steam explosion in the Boring Lava Field. The blast created a bean-shaped maar, and a volcano once about 400 feet high later gave way to the water-filled crater seen today. Before state ownership, the lake was a resort dating to the 1920s, with plans for expanded attractions and later operation by Virgil Dollar from 1964 to 1968. Washington acquired the property beginning in 1965, and the park remains notable for its volcanic landscape, forested setting, and recreation.
