On Dec. 14, 1774, in the first organized fight of the Revolution, gunpowder was taken from the British at Fort William and Mary in New Castle, transported by gundalow, concealed at this spot, and later used in the battle of Bunker Hill. John Sullivan, born Feb. 17, 1740, and died Jan. 23, 1795, is remembered here at the site of the meeting house under which that gunpowder was stored.
