Shinall Mountain, on Little Rock’s western edge in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, is Pulaski County’s highest natural point at 1,056 feet above mean sea level. Its name preserves the memory of the Chenault families who settled nearby before the American Civil War, while related local names such as Chenal reflect the same origin. Formed of Carboniferous rocks, the mountain has bluff sides with black shales that sometimes contain plant fossils. In modern Little Rock, its height has made it a major communications hub, serving television, FM radio, cellular, weather, emergency response, amateur radio, and regional emergency net operations.
