The original Town Hall of Mount Sterling was erected in 1883-1884 and was destroyed by fire on November 7, 1982. Its surviving columns and lintel remain from that building and stand as reminders of the town's past while the new building is intended as an inspiration for its future. Construction was made possible in part by a gift from John W. Galbreath, a native son whose achievements throughout the world brought honor to the community. The project was dedicated at ground breaking ceremonies on October 3, 1984, during the mayoralty of Hon. Lowell G. Anderson, with council members Ben A. Rainsberger, Darrell S. Cooper, William Mason, Robert Morgan, Mary Romine Stiverson, Patricia A. Riley, and clerk Betty J. Passwaters; the architect was A Consulting, Inc., with Richard L. Tully FAIA.
