Crowheart Butte is a summit in Wyoming’s Wind River Valley near the community of Crowheart, standing out as a local landmark in an open ranching landscape with views toward the Wind River Range. Its name preserves a local legend about a battle said to have taken place in 1866 between the Shoshone and Crow over mountain hunting rights. In the best-known version, after five days of fighting, Chief Washakie of the Shoshone and Chief Big Robber of the Crow agreed to decide the conflict in a duel. Washakie killed Big Robber, and the butte and nearby community took their name from that story.
