Brig.-Gen. James Johnston Pettigrew of North Carolina, C. S. A., commanded and led Heth’s Division in the assault on Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. During the retreat he was mortally wounded at Falling Water on July 14, 1863, and died on July 17, 1863, at the Boyd House. R. E. Lee called him “a brave and accomplished officer and gentleman,” and said his loss would be deeply felt by the country and the Army.
