The Union Pacific reached Fremont in 1866 and erected the new Union Depot at a cost of $50,000, giving the approach to the city a dignified and completed appearance with winding gravel walks, grass and flower plots, and a wide frontage. As a center for some 23 passenger trains and 36 daily mails, with an even larger number of freights, the need for good depot accommodations was clear. When the handsome new depot was built, the Union Pacific Railroad also recognized the need for a new freight depot to match the progress and improved appearance of that part of the city, and erected one at a cost of $10,000. In addition, it extended the capacity of the freight yards and added more track. The Union Pacific arguably had the greatest influence toward the building of the city of Fremont.
