Coachella Valley Preserve protects 2,206 acres of Southern California desert in the Indio Hills, including the Coachella Valley National Wildlife Refuge, the Indio Hills Palms Park Property, and the Thousand Palms Oasis Preserve. Its most distinctive feature is Thousand Palms Oasis, where groundwater trapped along the San Andreas Fault sustains groves of Washingtonia filifera, the California fan palm, the state’s only native palm. The preserve also safeguards important desert wildlife, including endangered desert pupfish in artesian ponds and the protected Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard. Managed by The Nature Conservancy and California state parks, it preserves a rare fault-fed oasis and fragile desert habitat.
