Klamath Marsh National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon was established in 1958 as an inviolate sanctuary for migratory birds. Encompassing about 40,000 acres, it was first named the Klamath Forest National Wildlife Refuge and later renamed after most of the historic Klamath Marsh came within its boundaries. Its large natural marsh provides vital nesting, feeding, and resting habitat for waterfowl, while surrounding meadowlands support sandhill crane, yellow rail, shorebirds, and raptors. Nearby pine forests add habitat for species such as the great gray owl and Rocky Mountain elk. Wocus Bay is also known in summer for canoeing and wildlife viewing through the marsh landscape.
