Mount Scott, a small stratovolcano on Crater Lake’s southeast flank in southern Oregon, is about 420,000 years old and forms part of the Mount Mazama complex. Its 8,934-foot summit is the highest point in Crater Lake National Park and the tenth highest peak in the Oregon Cascades. After erupting mainly andesitic lava, it became extinct in the late Pleistocene and survived the eruption that formed Crater Lake because of its distance from Mount Mazama’s main flanks. Named for pioneer Levi Scott, it is now valued both as a remnant of the Mazama volcanic system and as one of the park’s best-known summit hikes.
