McDonald Peak, at 9,820 feet, is the highest summit in Montana’s Mission Mountains and stands within the Flathead Indian Reservation. It is one of the state’s most commanding mountains, surpassed only by Crazy Peak in prominence, and the next higher peak in Montana lies nearly 80 miles away. Its north slope holds McDonald Glacier, a defining natural feature. In summer, the summit and nearby high country become feeding grounds for grizzly bears that gather to eat insects. To protect both wildlife and people, the area is closed to hikers from July 15 through September 30, underscoring the peak’s geographical and ecological importance.
