On this site stood the plant of the North Adams Iron Company, founded in 1846 and operated from 1858 to 1862 by John Adam Beckley, where ore was smelted for the plates used in building the Monitor, the famous antagonist of the Merrimac in the first combat of ironclad vessels in March 1862.
