Natural Bridge State Park in North Adams preserves a white marble arch and gorge regarded as unique in North America, shaped from bedrock about 550 million years old by glacial runoff after the last ice age. Hudson Brook carved the surrounding marble formations and flows into Hudson Cave, while local tradition connects its name to Lieutenant Seth Hudson. From about 1810 to 1947, the site was an active marble quarry that contributed to North Adams's growth, producing building stone and other goods. Even during quarrying, the natural bridge drew protection efforts and visitors, and the property later became a state park in 1985.
