William Leggs, a yeoman, purchased land from the trustees of the Town of Kingston in 1695/1696 and built a mill on the Sawkill Creek in 1696. The mill was reported to have ground wheat for the Continental Army. It operated until 1773 and was destroyed by fire in the 1880's.
