The Water Street area once had several shipyards. At the height of the China trade, the clipper ship Mt. Washington was built on the Saco River in 1867 and was the largest ship built there, with a displacement of 1,217 tons, a length of 184 feet, and a beam of 37 feet; a painting shows it in Canton Harbor, China. The schooner Jere G. Shaw, with a displacement of 793 tons, a length of 193 feet, and a beam of 36 feet, was the last large ship built in Biddeford. Schooners needed only twelve men to sail, compared to 36 for a clipper. The Hopkins and Allen Shipyard reopened in 1918 to build the Shaw. On the vessel's maiden voyage, sails worth $2700 were torn in a storm, the ship was sold, and investors took heavy losses.
