Thor Ericson built this barn in 1870 on a farm just south of Story City that had been in the same family since 1865. Built into the side of a hill as a basement barn, it allowed ground-level access to both levels. The low side was dug out and walled to form a basement of fieldstone and limestone, used for milking cows and keeping chickens and sheep, while the upper level had flooring, grain bins, feed, and hay storage. The original structure used mortise and tenon construction with hand-hewn timbers, assembled by hand and horse power without metal nails or hardware, using only wooden pins or pegs called trenails. In 2013 the barn was sold to a gentleman from Texas, who dismantled it and shipped the wood to Texas with plans to build a home from the old hand-hewn timbers. The farm passed through the families of Thor and Sarah Ericson from 1865 to 1910, Sampson and Emily Wierson from 1910 to 1951, Lawrence and Thelma Osheim from 1951 to 1992, and David and Rosemary Osheim from 1992 to the present.
