Potosi Peak is a 13,786-foot mountain in Colorado’s Sneffels Range, about five miles southwest of Ouray in the San Juan Mountains. Ranked 113th among Colorado’s peaks and fourth-highest in its range, it is especially notable for its dramatic southeast relief, rising about 4,000 feet above the Camp Bird Mine in roughly 1.5 miles. The mountain is part of the striking scenery near Yankee Boy Basin and is closely linked to the district’s gold and silver mining history. Its name, from Quechuan meaning “great wealth,” was in use before 1899 and later officially adopted by the United States Board on Geographic Names.
