Devil’s Punch Bowl below was formed when the roof over two sea caves collapsed, and ocean waves continue to crash through openings in the sandstone and sculpt the formation. At high tide, waves churn through openings below the water’s surface, filling the cavern and creating the punch bowl effect. The Devil’s Punch Bowl and Otter Rock site is part of a Marine Garden whose southern tip is here and which extends one mile north to the Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint, an area that offers opportunities to enjoy and learn about marine ecosystems. Activities here include tidepool viewing, marine mammal viewing, bird watching, whale watching, shore angling, and picnicking. Because the area is designated as a Marine Garden, collecting clams, mussels, or other marine invertebrates is not allowed, except that fishermen may collect single mussels for bait.
