Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area is a day-use park on the central Oregon coast at Otter Rock, centered on a bowl-shaped cavity in a rocky headland where Pacific waves surge in and churn to foam. Likely created when two sea caves collapsed, the basin becomes especially turbulent at high energy and was once called Satan’s Cauldron. The projecting headland offers wide coastal views and is known for surf watching and seasonal whale migration. Nearby rocks, including Gull Rock and others within the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge, add wildlife habitat and scenery. Acquired between 1929 and 1952, the park was later improved with Civilian Conservation Corps facilities and had become heavily visited by 1963.
