Piney Knoll Conservation Area in Orono, Maine, occupies the southern end of Marsh Island along the Penobscot River. Valued for bird-watching and local wildlife, it includes 4.5 miles of intersecting trails through a riverfront landscape. The protected area was established in 1991 with funds donated by Bangor Hydro-Electric Company during an unsuccessful effort to build a nearby dam, and in 2010 Land for Maine's Future helped the Orono Land Trust acquire 20 more acres for conservation. The land also preserves an older human history as the site of a former Penobscot settlement and a ferry port serving Bradley, Maine.
