Wolf Island National Wildlife Refuge is a barrier-island refuge about 12 miles off the coast of Darien, Georgia, created on April 3, 1930, to protect habitat for migratory birds on Wolf Island and the smaller Egg and Little Egg islands. Covering 5,126 acres, it is dominated by saltwater marsh, making it a broad tidal landscape rather than a developed shore. Its protection was strengthened in 1975 when it became a Wilderness Area, supporting migratory birds and threatened and endangered species such as the loggerhead sea turtle and piping plover. Fishing and crabbing are allowed in its salt waters, but its land areas are closed to the public.
