Sapelo Island Light, near the southern tip of Sapelo Island on the Georgia coast, was built in 1820 and is the nation’s second-oldest brick lighthouse as well as the oldest surviving lighthouse designed by Winslow Lewis. Originally fitted with Lewis lamps and reflectors, the tower was later raised and equipped with a fourth-order Fresnel lens before that lens was removed during the Civil War. Storms in 1867 and 1898 damaged the structure, and a new lighthouse built nearby in 1905 replaced it. Restored and relit in 1998, the site preserves the historic tower and related structures as an important survivor from the early history of coastal navigation in the United States.
