Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church was organized on this site in 1800 by settlers from North Carolina under the leadership of Pastor Marimon Landrum, and it was one of the county's original churches. The original log building, built with 12 corners for the 12 apostles, served for 67 years before it was replaced by a frame structure. In 1832, the congregation split between Missionary and Primitive Baptists, and both worshipped here until the current auditorium was built in 1904. The cemetery contains the graves of many early settlers, including the founding pastor and numerous Civil War veterans.
