Henry Horton State Park near Chapel Hill occupies about 1,000 acres along the Duck River and was created in the 1960s on the former estate of Henry Horton, Tennessee’s 36th governor. Dedicated on Labor Day in 1962 to Governor Buford Ellington, it combines wooded uplands, river access, and trails including Hickory Ridge Loop, Duck River Trail, and Wilhoite Mill Trail. The park offers an inn, cabins, campground, picnic shelters, sports fields, an Olympic-sized pool, trap and skeet facilities, meeting space, fishing, and a golf course named for Ellington. A BlueCross Healthy Place was added in 2020.
