James S. Hare, who lived from 1960 to 2018, was an announcer, historian, and ambassador of the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome whose distinct, warm, and confident voice, deep knowledge of aviation history, and sense of humor held audiences’ attention for more than 30 years as he taught them during weekend air shows. He came to the Aerodrome in 1982, performed a wide variety of duties with excellence, and formed lifelong friendships with many members of the staff and crew. Among his many experiences there, the most important was meeting Mary, who played “Madamoiselle Fifi” in the Sunday shows; they were married by 1989, in a wedding remembered as one of the rare occasions when Cole Palen wore a tie. While working directly for Cole, he also spent several winters at Cole’s shop in Del Ray Beach, Florida, assisting with aircraft projects during the off season to be brought back to Rhinebeck when flying weather returned to the Northeast. He shared captivating stories of his Aerodrome adventures, readily helped many of the Aerodrome’s first generation as their health declined in later years, and was remembered by those closest to him as the best, with a genuine heart of gold.
