On October 15, 1778, the largest military engagement in what is today Ocean County occurred near this site when a force of 200 British and Loyalist troops under Capt. Patrick Ferguson surprised and defeated a portion of Brig. Gen. Casmir Pulaski’s Legion under Lt. Col. Baron De Bose, and American losses numbered about 50 men.
