The Priest is a prominent mountain in Nelson County, Virginia, on a Blue Ridge spur within the Priest Wilderness of George Washington National Forest. The county’s highest point, it is associated with the DePriest family, whose service in the French and Indian War and the American Revolution led Thomas Jefferson in 1780 to grant John DePriest ten thousand acres here, including nearby DePriest Mountain and Little DePriest Mountain. The mountain stands in the Tye River watershed, with drainage flowing by several creeks and runs toward the James River. Crabtree Falls drops down its northwest slope, and the Appalachian Trail crosses its summit, making it both a landmark and a demanding hiking destination.
