First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who had a high regard for the welfare of children and a great concern for impoverished people, visited Greendale in 1936 to personally inspect this "Greenbelt" project. After clambering through one of the two-story homes, she stated Greendale was "absolutely wonderful" and "laid out beautifully".
