Nicholls House and Woolen Mill Site

Near Wellsburg, West Virginia, this property unites a late nineteenth-century home with the remains of a much earlier industrial site. Built in 1893, the two-and-a-half-story red-glazed brick house combines Second Empire features such as a tower and mansard roof with Colonial Revival elements on its full front porch, creating a late Victorian appearance. The site also preserves evidence of a woolen mill that operated here by 1795 for carding and manufacturing woolens. Together, the house and archaeological remains connect the property to both local residential architecture and the region’s early manufacturing history.
