The Davis Block stood at the northeast corner of Eleven Mile Road and Harper Avenue and by the mid-1920s was one of the city's bustling retail centers. Dan Davis, a real-estate developer with a pioneering spirit, gave the block its name. At a time when Lake Township was a landscape of rambling farmlands and scattered summer resort cottages along the lake, Davis became active in promoting the Stanley Park subdivision in 1916. By the fall of 1922, he and Mrs. Davis had decided to move to Lake Township and built a home on Town Hall Road, also called Eleven Mile, and Florence Avenue. Davis also played an integral role in the formation of the village of St. Clair Shores and was elected its second president. In 1925 he constructed a block of stores, and by 1926 six establishments were occupied. The village offices of St. Clair Shores were once located within the Davis Block along with many small businesses. The two-story structure stretched along Harper and turned the corner onto Eleven Mile Road, offering both commercial services and local government functions. Among its early tenants were Ralph's grocery, the Downing drugstore, the Davis Service Station, Sid Read's Drug Store, Charles Vornberger's Hardware, and Mrs. Nelson's Dry Goods, while a separate building housed Parson's Garage. Along the outer edge of the Eleven Mile Road side were gas pumps, a pit for oil changes, and an ice house. By the middle of the 1960s the Davis Block had been demolished. A new Kroger supermarket was built on the site in 1966, Dale's Drugs took over the building in 1976, Arbor Drugs became the occupants in 1985, and as of 2015 a CVS Pharmacy stood there.
