In December 1944, the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division arrived at Bastogne on December 19 and took up positions defending the southern half of the city. Over the next eight days, the regiment repulsed multiple German armor and infantry assaults during the siege, actions that helped earn it the nickname "The Battling Bastards of Bastogne." For its service there, the 327th Glider Infantry Regiment received the Presidential Unit Citation, the Belgian Croix de Guerre, 1940 with Palm, and the Belgian Fourragere, 1940.
