Camden Snow Bowl, a municipal ski area on Ragged Mountain in Camden, Maine, opened in 1936 during the Great Depression and became one of New England’s oldest continuously operating ski areas. Built through local volunteer labor and New Deal assistance, it developed from early rope-tow slopes into a year-round recreation area with skiing, hiking, and mountain biking, and is especially notable for East Coast ocean views. It is best known for its long toboggan tradition, centered on the Jack Williams Toboggan Chute onto frozen Hosmer Pond. That tradition continues through Winterfest and the annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships, reflecting the mountain’s enduring community importance.
