Robert Townsend, a Quaker, abolitionist, and industrialist, gave safe refuge in his 1835 home to runaways traveling up the Beaver River, using stone steps at the rear of the house. When two local boys were kidnapped and sold into slavery, his committee financed the search for their return. One rescued boy lived in his home for nine years.
