Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge protects and restores coastal wetlands and spring-fed stream habitat along Lake Superior near Ashland, Wisconsin, as part of a larger wetland complex on the lake’s south shore. Established in 1999, it is being actively assembled and rehabilitated to conserve wildlife habitat and aquatic resources in the Whittlesey Creek watershed. Plans call for acquiring up to 540 acres and protecting as much as 1,260 acres through conservation easements, with 329 acres protected by 2010. A central goal is restoring coaster brook trout, while improving habitat for other fish and migratory birds that depend on these wetlands and tributary streams.
