Gary J. Hebert, 1929-1994, fought to save this historic property when there was a strong push to destroy the lock for a four-lane highway. After a two year battle in the early 1970's, his vigilant and untiring efforts led to the lock being placed on the National Register of Historic Places, protecting it permanently. His vision, courage, and perseverance prevailed despite harsh opposition.
