Long Island Head Light on Long Island in Boston Harbor has guided an important inner approach to the harbor since 1819. The present brick tower is the fourth lighthouse on the site, replacing earlier stone and cast-iron structures as age, storms, and nearby military expansion at Fort Strong forced changes. Its evolution reflects advances in lighthouse technology, including an 1857 installation of a fourth-order Fresnel lens, and decades of steady service under keepers such as Captain Charles A. Beck. Discontinued by the Coast Guard in 1982, it returned to service in 1985 with solar power, was refurbished in 1998, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
